UK MoD unveils names for fifth and sixth Type 26 frigates

The fifth and sixth Type 26 City-class frigates to be delivered to the British Royal Navy will be named Sheffield and Newcastle, respectively, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed in a recent statement.

The fourth Royal Navy vessel to be named Sheffield and the seventh to be named Newcastle will be used primarily to conduct anti-submarine warfare (ASW) missions when these enter service.

Each frigate will have a length of 149.9 metres, a width of 20.8 metres, a displacement of 6,900 tonnes, and a crew of 118. One Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine will deliver speeds in excess of 26 knots.

Armament will include naval guns, point-defence guns, anti-air missiles, anti-submarine missiles, and cruise missiles.
