The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Galveston District has awarded a US$92,551,470 contract to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company to deepen and widen the Corpus Christi Ship Channel (CCSC) from the Gulf of Mexico to Harbor Island as part of the federally authorised CCSC Improvement Project.
The contract work will occur starting upstream of the Port Arkansas Ferry Landing and extending 12.2 kilometres into the Gulf of Mexico. It will increase the channel depth from -14 metres mean lower low water (MLLW) to -16 metres MLLW from the jetties at the entrance of the ship channel to the Ferry Landing, and will extend the CCSC into the Gulf of Mexico to -17 metres MLLW requiring the removal of approximately five million cubic metres of material.
Work is scheduled to begin in mid-February 2019 with an estimated completion date of mid-February 2020. This is the first of several contracts planned to improve the project.
