Philippines secures funds for Malandog River dredging

DENR
DENR – The Malandog River project follows work to clean up Manila’s historic Pasig River.

The Philippines’ Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has allocated US$800,000 for the rehabilitation and development of the historic Malandog River.

The funds will be utilised for the dredging of the already silted river, removal of fish traps and debris, rehabilitation and improvement of riverbanks, and other activities.

Tourism and Environment committee chairman Errol Santillan said there was an urgent need for the work so large boats known as balangay could dock at the riverside for the Binirayan Festival re-enactment on December 26.

“The project is very timely because Malandog will be the core of the Binirayan Festival re-enactment,” said Mr Santillan.
