The US Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) has awarded US$19.6 million in discretionary grants to 24 small shipyards through the Small Shipyard Grant Program, the agency said on Tuesday, April 21.

The funding is expected to help modernise small shipyards, making them more efficient in constructing commercial vessels.

Shipyards in 18 states and in the overseas territory of Guam are slated to receive the grant funding.
