Eight dead after sand dredger capsizes in south-eastern Bangladesh

Bangladeshi media reports that eight people were killed after a sand extraction dredger capsized near the south-eastern port city of Chattogram on Tuesday, October 25.

The dredger Saikat-2 capsized as the area where it was operating was experiencing strong winds and large waves brought about by Cyclone Sitrang as it headed north from the Bay of Bengal and made landfall on Tuesday.

The search operation for the eight crewmen stretched out to over 48 hours due to bad weather in the area.

Four deceased crewmen were found within 24 hours of the capsizing while the remaining four fatalities were recovered by the morning (local time) of Thursday, October 27.

Only one of the dredger’s nine crewmembers survived the incident. Officials said this individual was able to swim to shore whereas his companions had become trapped inside the ill-fated vessel.
