Coastal protection works begin at UK’s Hayling Island

UK-based Coastal Partners has begun coastal flood mitigation works at Eastoke on Hayling Island off the south coast of England.

Coastal Partners said the work will help protect homes and businesses against coastal flooding. It includes shingle being replaced onto the beach by a dredger.

Following this, the beach will be reshaped to provide adequate protection for the winter.

A suitable height and width of the beach at Eastoke needs to be in place to reduce the risk of flooding to properties. The beach level is set out in the Beach Management Plan for Eastoke to provide a 1:200-year standard of protection to the properties there.

Coastal Partners said that if the height of the beach was reduced, the sea would regularly overtop the seawall during storm events.
