From Baird Maritime
A massive, carefully researched biography of one of the key figures in the Pacific part of World War Two.
Rochefort was undoubtedly a genius but, like many such, he was irascible, enigmatic and very much an outsider from the lower deck so far as the U.S. Navy's officer corps was concerned.
His early career prepared him well for war with Japan. There is no doubt that his codebreaking contributed significantly to America's decisive victory in the war-winning Battle of Midway.
He made enemies. The Distinguished Service Medal for which he was recommended in 1942 by Admiral Nimitz was finally awarded to him, posthumously, in 1986.
As the author makes very clear, despite his irascibility and eccentricities, Captain Rochefort deserved better.
