On Oslo Fjord, near the Norwegian capital is a very impressive maritime museum. Alongside the less impressive Kon Tiki museum is a memorial to Norway's supremacy in Arctic and Antarctic exploration. Its centre piece is the amazingly small vessel 'Fram'.
A Colin Archer designed motor sailing ship 'Fram' was the chosen ice exploration vessel of Norway's three best known Polar explorers, Nansen, Amundsen and Sverdrup.
A 38 metre, three-masted, wooden schooner, 'Fram' was launched from Colin Archer's Larvik yard in 1892. With a hardwood hull 60cm thick, she was massively built to survive in the Arctic ice for periods of up to five years.
That is the ship. The adventures she undertook under a number of commanders are legendary. The author, who has considerable polar experience himself, describes them well.
