The author is a young Canadian freelance journalist who, a few months after graduating from university and eschewing journalism school, ventured alone to Somalia in early 2009.
His objective was to investigate and report on the then burgeoning piracy blight that was centred on the lawless Somali province of Puntland.
Amazingly he achieved that and created a substantial career for himself that has seen him published in many of the world's leading newspapers and broadcast by most of their electronic peers. At the same time he has produced probably the most informative and fair-minded book on the subject of Somali piracy.
What we have here, then, is an amalgam of boys' own adventures and first rate news reporting. A brilliant first effort that has, fittingly, been well rewarded.
