From Baird Maritime
While having nothing whatever to do with the sea and ships, this book should nevertheless, strike a chord with many of our readers – if only because if was published by the always excellent Naval Institute Press.
Having spent a few very interesting days in the company of a captain in the Russian Navy's counter-intelligence division shortly after the Soviet Union imploded your reviewer is particularly fascinated by the subject. Most of the events described here took place shortly before that experience.
While Ames was probably not in the league of Britain's Cambridge crew of Blunt, Maclean, Philby et al he was certainly destructive of America's human and reputational assets. Some of the Brits may have had political or philosophical motives but Ames acted purely for profit.
The story is fascinating and well told by Ames' two female colleagues who eventually exposed him and worked purposefully towards his ultimate conviction.
Fascinating.
