It may be difficult to believe now but for half a century or so, in the nineteenth century, Australia's small island (now) state of Tasmania was a significant maritime centre.
Captain Robinson's career largely coincided with that flowering of the Tasmanian maritime industry. Importantly, his family prevailed upon him to record his seagoing life. Fortunately, he did so shortly before he died.
Just as fortunately, maritime archaeologist Michael Nash came upon Robinson's manuscript and very effectively edited it.
Robinson was a classic example of the merchant adventurer of Victorian times. He ventured into cargo shipping, whaling, sealing, guano collecting and gold and tin mining. Like most such entrepreneurs he had his successes and failures.
They all make for a wonderful history which has been well illustrated by a careful selection of high quality lithographs and photographs.
