From Baird Maritime:

A very extensively and carefully researched history of America's riverine and estuarine naval activity spanning nearly two centuries. The book benefits from the author's obviously great interest in and enthusiasm for the subject.

Comprising quite detailed reports of major riverine campaigns, they are enhanced with commentary, both historical and projected. It is a useful approach that sets the lessons learnt from each conflict in context.

The use of heavily armed, and armoured, small, shallow draft vessels has, when appropriate, proved to be very rewarding. The problem has always been that the wider US Navy, and its counterparts elsewhere, usually seem to have forgotten the benefits of riverine vessels before they are needed again.

The author, thus, provides those tasked with fighting future wars with some useful ideas and inspiration, or doctrine, that are solidly grounded in real history.
