From Baird Maritime
Having read some appalling hagiographical writing about the "heroism" of the Sea Shepherd group and its braggart creator and commander Paul Watson, your reviewer was prepared for the worst when he opened this book.
Surprisingly and very pleasingly, though, he was hardly able to put it down. While the author did sail to Antarctic waters with Sea Shepherd and participated in some of its "battles" with the perfidious Japanese, he has managed to produce a fair-minded and fascinating account of the whale wars.
He sees them as an ongoing conflict between the proudly piratical Sea Shepherd gang and the relentlessly righteous Japanese government. By his account, neither side has much to commend it.
As Sea Shepherd adjusts is focus from Japanese whalers to Spanish backed toothfish poachers, it will be interesting to see if it gains as much public support as it did for its efforts on behalf of the far more attractive whales. Interestingly, Sea Shepherd seems to have never uttered a word in protest against Japan's far greater crime with its poaching of southern blue fin tuna.
