By Anthony P. Tully
From Baird Maritime:
This book presents an enormous amount of scholarly research and, importantly, a new approach to the important Surigao Strait component of the overall Battle of Leyte Gulf.
That, in itself, is a valuable contribution to the history of the Pacific War. The problem, though, is that the mass of information both old and new, is very difficult to digest.
The book cries out for a competent and careful editor. It would also have benefitted considerably from the attention of a better proof reader. The glossary and maps are wholly inadequate and some terminology is completely wrong. The photographs are mostly not only bad, but poorly reproduced. Brief biographies of all the main human and vessel participants would also have helped.
It is a difficult read when you have to plough through such a mass of facts and thoughts with an atlas and a book of naval terminology beside you. This is sad because many of the facts and thoughts are important.
This book is important enough to be reprinted following a thorough re-editing.
