As usual, these books focus on an individual who is described against the broader canvas of the industry of which he was a part. This life of Captain William Donald was written from his notes by his daughter.
So, while they are useful and fascinating biographies in themselves, such books double as very useful histories of the wider maritime world. This one covers the unusually lengthy period of a career spanning fifty years.
And, what is career it was! It includes two World Wars, ranks from deck boy to Commodore, a wide range of types of ship, and, practically the whole world.
A fascinating and well written book with lots of serious stuff leavened by plenty of humour.
An excellent and valuable record.
