BOOK REVIEW | Hull Surveying – An Introduction & Machinery Surveying – An Introduction

Mike Wall needs no introduction to readers of Baird Maritime. He is undoubtedly the world’s-best known marine surveyor. He has written most of the books on that vast subject that are currently in print. He has lectured widely and interestingly on the same subject. Mike has worked all over the world as a marine engineer, but particularly in Asia, where he has “seen it all”. He is now semi-retired and living in Thailand.

These two books need to be reviewed as one because they are very closely related and were, indeed, once one book. Now, thanks to endless revisions, refinement, expansions and enhancements, especially much better illustrations, they have been released as two much more easily lifted and handled volumes.

Basically, they condense the author’s sixty years of seagoing engineering and surveying experience. As can be imagined, his many years in Asia have alerted him to “every trick in the book” and then some. Much of this is revealed through the 900 brilliantly illustrated pages that the combined books comprise.

It is fascinating and very useful stuff for both surveyors and engineers wherever they may operate.
