Teledyne Marine has secured a contract from the UK Ministry of Defence to support the Royal Navy’s future maritime data gathering programme. This agreement involves the supply of autonomous ocean observing systems, including various underwater gliders and autonomous units.

These systems are intended to strengthen oceanographic and environmental data collection capabilities for operational planning and maritime safety. Under the programme, the equipment will provide data collection from remote maritime environments to assist with information advantage.

Teledyne will also provide associated services to ensure the fleet remains operational for defence activities. This programme expands on the naval use of these technologies which has been ongoing since 2015.

Commander Butcher, a capability sponsor for the Royal Navy, stated the investment strengthens the ability to understand and operate in the North Atlantic.

He added that persistent data from these systems, “enhances our understanding of the underwater battlespace, enabling tactical exploitation of the environment and delivering the operational and information advantage commanders need.”

Teledyne remarked that its unmanned systems have been purchased by 18 navies worldwide and are currently operational with several NATO and US partners.
