Maersk Line's 4300-TEU containership 'Maersk Gateshead' has returned to its weekly "Boomerang" service between Australia, North Asia and East Asia following the completion of engine repairs.
It is understood the vessel suffered a lube-oil leak leading to an engine room scavenge fire and engine breakdown, when en route from Sydney to Melbourne on the night of June 1. With the damage too severe to address at anchor, the eight-year-old vessel had to be taken under tow for repairs at Sydney's Darling Harbour berth.
Although there was no apparent structural damage to the 'Maersk Gateshead's' engine, some replacement parts needed to be sourced. At the time of the incident, Maersk advised it was seeking a full technical assessment of the 55,000DWT ship.
