Hamburg Süd christened the container ship 'Santa Catarina' on Friday in Itapoá, Brazil. The 'Santa Catarina' takes her name from the Brazilian federal state in which the christening was held.

The 'Santa Catarina' is the fifth newbuilding in a series of ten identical container vessels, each featuring a slot capacity of 7,100TEU and fitted with 1,600 reefer plugs apiece. This puts them among the largest ships ever built for Hamburg Süd. All ten vessels of this series will be delivered by summer 2012.

Since her delivery at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea in March 2011, 'Santa Catarina' has been operating in Hamburg Süd's New Good Hope Expressservice between Asia and South Africa/South America East Coast.
