Five crew members were killed on Sunday morning following an explosion onboard an oil tanker off the coast of South Korea.

The explosion took place aboard the vessel 'Doola No. 3' in waters approximately five kilometres north of Jawol Island near Incheon, according to Yonhap News Agency. Five people have been rescued, while the Coast Guard is continuing efforts to locate a further six crew members who remain missing.

The ship's operator Doola Shipping said the incident apparently happened as the oil tank was being drained. Coast Guard officials have stated it occurred as crew members were cleaning the oil tank on the deck. The ship was bound for Daesan in South Chungcheong Province, having just unloaded 6,500 tonnes of gasoline at Incheon.
