CMA CGM's 11,400TEU 'CMA CGM Andromeda', considered to be one of the world's greenest vessels, made its first call at the HIT Terminal in Hong Kong recently.
This latest generation vessel, the biggest in the Marseilles-based shipping giant's fleet, is 363 metres long, 45 metres wide and has a draught of 15.5 metres.
"This flagship is a combination of innovative environmental features, including the pioneering fast oil recovery system to prevent marine pollution, fitted here for the first time on a containership," said a statement from the carrier.
The 'CMA CGM Andromeda' has an electronically-controlled engine, which is expected to significantly reduce fuel and oil consumption. She is also equipped with a multi-chamber waste compactor for recycling rubbish on board, and a twisted leading edge rudder to optimise the hydrodynamics and energy use.
Since leaving South Korea on March 17, the mega-ship has been deployed on the FAL 1 (French Asia Line) service.
"It is an historic route for CMA CGM linking Asia to North Europe, giving the group complete coverage of the three main Chinese export regions: North China (Xingang and Dalian), Central China (Shanghai), and South China (Yantian)," said CMA CGM.
The 'CMA CGM Andromeda' also calls at two of CMA CGM's major Mediterranean hubs: Malta, the group's transshipment platform in the eastern Mediterranean, and the recently opened Tangier Med, which offers a range of new transport opportunities between Asia and Africa's west coast.
After its call at Hong Kong, the 'CMA CGM Andromeda' continued her port rotation to China, Singapore and Malaysia, before heading back to Europe.
