Builder of top ranking ship reports US$12 million loss

Croatia's Brodosplit Shipyard has recently reported a US$12 million loss despite building a vessel which was ranked amongst the top ships of 2009 by Baird Publications' Ships and Shipping Magazine.

In 2009, the Brodosplit Shipyard delivered 'Stena Progress' to Concordia Maritime, Sweden. The 183-metre-long vessel is a 62,500-tonne capacity oil tanker and has a maximum speed of 14.5 knots. Sailing under the flag of Panama, the vessel was chosen as one of the top ships of 2009 due to its sophisticated characteristics, Green Passport, twin propulsion engines,  and high ecological standards. The wide hull of the 'Stena Progress' means that the vessel is able to carry 30 percent more cargo without affecting its draught.

The Head of Brodosplit, Srdjan Kovac, said that the ranking recognised the quality of the shipyard's work and the Croatian shipbuilding industry, however, the shipyard was still affected by the bad market situation.
