GE Marine and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC) have announced approval in principle (AiP) for a jointly developed gas turbine-powered LNG carrier design.

The AiP, issued by Lloyd's Register, was sought for the design as it was a concept not believed to be traditional classification rules.

Brien Bolsinger, GE Marine's Vice President of Marine Operations, said the AiP meant the two companies could now progress to the final vessel design stages and prepare for construction.

The LNG carrier design emphasises lower life cycle costs, better environmental performance and a high level of reliability.

It is envisioned that the initial LNG carrier design will be built around a gas turbine-based combined gas turbine electric and steam system (COGES), featuring one 30-megawatt gas turbine generator set and one steam turbine generator-set for power production.
