The Los Angeles Maritime Museum, USA, is hoping to raise US$30,000 to conduct overdue repairs to a historic tug.
Named Angels Gate, the vessel was originally built for service during WWII, but was completed around the same time as the conclusion of the war. The vessel was declared surplus property by the federal government and was shortly after purchased by the Port of Los Angeles and given its current name.
In 1992, the vessel was retired and was donated to the museum, which has been using it in educational programmes to teach students taking maritime courses at the Port of Los Angeles High School.
Mary Frances Trivelli, Director of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, explained that repairs are typically conducted every 18 months, but that repairs had already fallen six months behind schedule. She said that due to budget cuts, the city of Los Angeles was no longer able to help with the repairs of the historic tug, hence the museum has decided to raise money on its own.
Ms Trivelli said that the museum would accept donations of any amount.
