Korea: Salvage of wrecked naval vessel begins

Published on

Two floating cranes have been deployed for the task of salvaging the wrecked Korean Navy corvette which sank under mysterious conditions in March.

The cranes will be used to move parts of the ship's hull to an offshore platform into a dock for assembly.

The cranes are a 3,600-tonne crane, 'Cheonan' built by DSME, and a 2,200-tonne crane built by Samho.

One industry insider cautioned that the use of the cranes could potentially be dangerous. He said that floating cranes were usually used on the south coast where the seas are clamer, unlike Baeknyeong Island in the West Sea, where there are strong winds and waves.
