Maryland-based Chesapeake Shipbuilding has placed an order with Baltimore's Vane Brothers to design and build four new push tugs.

The yet-to-be-named, Subchapter M-compliant tugs will be 28.6 metres LOA, 10.3 metres wide and 3.2 metres deep.

The new 2,237kW tugs will be equipped with twin Caterpillar 3512 main engines, conventional shafts, rudders and flanking rudders.

They will accommodate up to seven crew in private and semi-private quarters.

Design and construction on the tugs will begin immediately at Chesapeake Shipbuilding's hull fabrication buildings.
