Canadian naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd (RAL) has been awarded a contract to design a new ship handling and firefighting tug for Ningbo Port in China, the company said on Wednesday, October 14.

The vessel will be built by Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard. She will have a length of approximately 38 metres and an estimated bollard pull of 87.5 tonnes.

The tug will have a FiFi2 firefighting setup as well as a dry chemical powder firefighting system.

"This combination will enable the tug to provide effective marine firefighting support while maintaining exceptional ship-handling performance in and around Ningbo Port," said RAL.

RAL said its work with Ningbo Port dated to 2004.

The company has produced several series of ASD tugs ranging from 32 to 39 metres in length, including an LNG-diesel dual-fuel tug, for the port.

RAL had previously designed another 38-metre tug from a different series for Ningbo Port. Yong Gang Xiao Tuo 60 is a dual-fuel tug that was also built by Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard and delivered to the port in 2020.

The earlier tug is equipped to FiFi1 standard and recorded a bollard pull of 80.3 tonnes ahead on trials.
