Contract signed for Tung Chung land reclamation works in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) yesterday signed a HK$12.0 billion (US$1.5 billion) land reclamation contract with the Build King-SCT joint venture at Tung Chung East.

The contract mainly comprises reclamation of the seabed by non-dredging methods to form a total of about 130 hectares of land.

It includes construction of seawalls with an eco-shoreline, construction of a multi-cell drainage box culvert, provision of infrastructure for Tung Chung Area 58, and implementation of the associated environmental mitigation measures.

The work started on December 29 and will be completed in 2023.

An important feature is the separation of the Tung Chung New Town from the Chek Lap Kok Island by a sea channel and an existing knoll as a natural noise barrier.

The agreement covers reclamation works in Tung Chung East and advance works for the Tung Chung new town extension project, which will provide accommodation for 140,000 people together with 870,000 square metres of commercial floor space.

The reclamation will provide 40,000 new flats for housing and economic development.

The new land will be delivered in phases with a view to having the first population intake in 2023.
