VESSEL REVIEW | Jaric – Bespoke, high-speed pleasure craft delivered to French owner
French yacht owner Jacky Setton recently took delivery of a new fast pleasure craft built locally by Multiplast Shipyard to design by naval architecture firm Mauric.
Jaric has an LOA of 18.25 metres (59.88 feet), a beam of 4.2 metres (14 feet), a draught of only 0.65 metre (2.1 feet), and accommodation for up to 10 passengers.
“The requirement of the owner was to combine the performance characteristics of rescue vessels and fast interceptor hulls with the refined comfort expected in a luxury yacht,” Mauric told Baird Maritime. “The owner [wanted] a luxur[ious], comfortable and fast boat able to sail faster than 40 knots [while possessing the] seakeeping of a rescue boat.”
Combining high performance with improved safety
The boat was designed in compliance with French category B for offshore voyages for conditions up to and including Beaufort Force eight and where significant wave heights of up to four metres (13 feet) may be experienced.
According to the designer, the lightweight yet robust composite construction mixing FRP and a carbon fibre structure provides an optimal weight-to-strength ratio, which then contributes to both performance and efficiency.
“[The boat] has three Mercury V12 engines of 600 hp (450 kW) each,” said Mauric. “[These are the] biggest outboard engine[s] with a fixed body, [with] only the base and propeller turning to steer the boat.”
Trials showed that the three Mercury outboards are capable of propelling Jaric to a top speed of 43 knots. At a cruising speed of 30 knots, the boat can sail up to 300 nautical miles.
Comfort-enhancing features for both transits and port stays
A custom battery system designed by SkySat enables noise-free operation while at anchor, providing comfort during stationary periods. For enhanced comfort during cruising, the vessel is equipped with a gyroscopic stabiliser that significantly reduces roll motions at sea.
The boat also features an integrated flybridge that has been placed as low as possible but still high enough to provide a 360-degree view for the helm operator. This placement was incorporated as Mauric wanted to keep the layout, “as simple as possible with a nice wide and comfortable deck.”
Design inspired by racing yachts
Jaric was designed in collaboration with the owner, and the interior accommodation spaces were crafted by Golfe Agencement under the direction of Anthony Lepiouff.
According to Mauric, the vessel is the company’s first delivery to Jacky Setton in 45 years following an earlier fast sailing yacht.
The main challenge in designing the vessel proved to be, “finding the balance between having a robust hull [and a] very light and optimised composite hull (epoxy, carbon and [FRP]), [as was similar to] the process of [designing a] racing sailing yacht,” Mauric told Baird Maritime.
“The studies have challenged us to improve our capacities to design a luxury yacht with special customer requests and adapt it to our fast high-performance hull form.”
