VESSEL REVIEW | Deep Blue – Sleek 134m superyacht with diesel-electric propulsion

Eight generators feed four electric motors driving twin azimuthing pods fitted on the yacht, which carries notations for battery power, SCR emissions control and recyclability.

German shipbuilder Lürssen has handed over Deep Blue, a 134.22-metre (440.35-foot) LOA motor yacht fitted with a diesel-electric propulsion plant and a set of DNV class notations covering battery power, exhaust aftertreatment and recyclability.

The steel-hulled displacement monohull was built to Lürssen's own naval architecture, with exterior design by Winch Design.

The Cayman Islands-registered vessel holds the DNV main class notation ✠1A Yacht and the vessel and service type notation Passenger (PY3). She can accommodate up to 24 guests and 45 crew.

Deep Blue has a length between perpendiculars of 130.57 metres (428.38 feet), a beam of 19.8 metres (65 feet), a depth of 5.6 metres (18 feet), and a draught of 5.1 metres (17 feet). Her gross tonnage is 9,079, net tonnage is 2,724, and deadweight is 1,358. The hull is topped by an aluminium superstructure.

Eight MTU 16V2000M72 generators supply power to four electric motors, which are connected to twin azimuthing podded thrusters. The total installed power is 11,520 kW. Motion damping is provided by four fin stabilisers.

The yacht has a maximum speed of 16 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots. The propulsion arrangement also includes a battery installation and a selective catalytic reduction system to help reduce NOx emissions in line with IMO Tier III requirements.

The foredeck is configured for helicopter operations. Aft, the decks are arranged in tiers and finished in teak.

The yacht has two swimming pools, including an aft pool with a cascading-water feature. A large beach club near the waterline provides direct access to the sea.

The superstructure features dark panoramic glazing. The structural framework behind the windows is set back about 30 centimetres (12 inches) from the glass, allowing long glazed panels without supports flush against them.

The interiors are air-conditioned and also feature a lift for ease of movement across multiple decks. LED strip lighting was meanwhile used for the exteriors.

Construction of Deep Blue began in late 2022. After assembly in Lürssen's halls at Vegesack, the structure was moved to a covered floating dock on the other side of the Weser River.

The yacht was launched on June 27, 2025. Outfitting and sea trials in the North Sea followed, and in April 2026, the yacht left Lürssen's facilities in Germany bound for Poole in the UK for delivery.
