BIMCO has urged merchant vessels to adopt the industry-recommended Best Management Practices and to register with the Maritime Security Centre – Horn of Africa to reduce the likelihood of falling victim to pirates.
Best Management Practices include a range of tactics to suppress pirate attacks. Measures include the use of fire hoses, increased speeds, evasive manoeuvres and securing hatches.
Last month, there were no successful pirate attacks in the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC). This route is patrolled by the Counter-Piracy Task Force. However, BIMCO cautioned that commercial vessels should not depend solely upon military intervention.
