A team of UN human rights officers visited various sites at the Alang Shipbreaking yard earlier this week to assess the working conditions and facilities.
The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) said that the team also talked to workers and authorities regarding personal and environmental safety concerns and learned about the disposal of hazardous products and wastes in the yard.
The officials then stopped at the village of Sosiya, where some ships were being scrapped, for viewing.
The UN team was headed by Okechukwu Ibeanu, Specialist Rapperteur of the UN Human Rights Council on the adverse effects of the movement and dumping of toxic and dangerous products and wastes on the enjoyment of human rights, and Human Rights officer Stefano Sensi.
