Construction of a US$10 million tidal power plant has been completed at the Uldolmok Plant at Jindo Island, South Jeolla Province.
The 1,000kW plant is capable of producing 2.4 gigawatt-hours of electricity per year, and is capable of powering some 400 homes. The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said that the second stage of the project would expand power output to 90,000kW.
According to Korea Times, another plant, to be completed next year, is currently under construction. The Sihwa plant, in the Gyeonggi Province, near Seoul, will be the world's biggest tidal power plant. It will be capable of producing 250,000kW per hour using water from the Sihiwa reservoir.
