Tianjin Port recently took the lead among Chinese ports to initiate Eco-Port Construction and Implementation Planning.

The project focuses on constructing a culture and infrastructure of ecological sustainability, involving six areas, including construction of specialised terminals, renewable energy applications, environmental governance, ecological and environmental construction, enhancing environmental management capacity and other infrastructure construction.

Thirty-four eco-port projects have been planned, with a total investment of nearly US$1.7 million.

The initial goal is that by 2010, indicators will have met the benchmarks for eco-city construction in Tianjin. These benchmarks are: water quality, environmental air quality, noise environment quality, recycling rate of industrial water, carbon dioxide emission levels, sulphur dioxide emission intensity, centralised treatment rate of sewage, domestic garbage disposal rate, investment index of environmental protection, and enterprises subject to the implementation of clean production.

Tianjin Port will also build a platform for modern environmental management to further enhance environmental management within the port.
