Sweden’s Sirius Shipping christened the first vessel in a new series of tankers in a ceremony in Donsö on Thursday, September 24.
The Swedish-flagged Marinus has already begun serving a long-term time charter with VaroPreem. China Merchants Industry Yangzhou Dingheng Shipyard delivered the ship on July 10, while sister Maximus is due to join the same charter later this year.
The tanker will carry traditional products as well as renewable feedstocks and products in Sweden, the Baltics, and Northwest Europe. Varopreem plans to use the ship to connect its manufacturing sites and terminals with customers across the region.
Built to a Kongsberg Maritime design, Marinus can carry 17,530 cubic metres of cargo and has a 5,850kW main engine. The tanker is 147 metres long with a 22-metre beam and a summer draught of 9.10 metres. Bureau Veritas has classed her to ice 1A standards.
The vessel’s 420kWh battery pack helps smooth power peaks and prevent blackouts. A 1,000kW shore power connection can meanwhile supply electricity at berth where facilities are available.
