Japan's MOL issues statement on supposed suspension of LNG carrier orders

Japanese shipping company Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) said that there have been recent media reports suggesting that MOL intends to suspend orders for new LNG carriers from Chinese shipyards.

MOL would like to clarify that, taking the current geopolitical circumstance into account, the company will exercise "prudent judgement" in selecting shipyards for any new LNG carrier orders.

"LNG plays a significant role as an energy source supporting the global transition to a decarbonised society," the company said in a press release dated May 26, 2025.

"MOL’s mission is to support stable energy supplies in Japan and the world as a leading LNG transportation operator. Securing a stable LNG transportation infrastructure is essential to meet this demand."

The company said that there is only a limited number of shipyards in the world capable of building the "high-quality LNG carriers" needed to provide stable LNG transportation and that Chinese shipyards are, "important partners [in ensuring] diversification and flexibility in procurement sources."

MOL said that shipping companies have been ordering LNG carriers from Chinese shipyards, guided by their own discretion and customers’ requirements. However, many are now closely monitoring trends, including the United States', "consideration of additional port fees for Chinese-built vessels," and other influencing factors.

"MOL will continue to carefully assess the use of Chinese shipyards that meet its quality and safety standards, alongside South Korean shipyards, while taking a comprehensive view of future US policy trends and geopolitical risks, to fulfill the global demand for LNG transportation," the company concluded.
