Galveston LNG Bunker Port and Loa Carbon partner on e-LNG fuel production

Published on:

Galveston LNG Bunker Port (GLBP) and e-methane producer Loa Carbon have signed a letter of intent (LOI) to provide e-LNG fuel to the maritime bunker market in the US Gulf Coast. The GLBP project is projected to come online in 2028.

Under the agreement, Loa Carbon will provide "renewable e-methane" directly to the GLBP facility for liquefaction into e-LNG. GLBP will then supply the fuel by barge to LNG-fueled vessels in the greater Houston-Galveston region.

The companies stated that the Texas City location offers advantages for cost-competitive e-methane production. These include abundant industrially captured and biogenic CO2 feedstock, low-cost renewable power from the ERCOT grid, and access to the 45V hydrogen production tax credit for "green hydrogen" production.

Jonathan Cook, CEO of Pilot LNG, the developer of the GLBP project, stated that the partnership will enable GLBP to be the first supplier of e-LNG bunker fuel in North America. Dan Wojno, COO for Loa Carbon, noted that the integrated approach provides shipowners a pathway to, "scalable, low-carbon fuel without requiring operational changes to their vessels."
