Greenpeace protests Europe's continued gas imports by blocking LNG carrier arriving in Belgium

Eight members of environmental activist group Greenpeace temporarily blocked an LNG carrier coming from the US and heading for the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium on Thursday, March 27.

The group said the move by the members of Greenpeace Belgium was done in protest of Europe's continued dependence on natural gas imports.

Aboard the Greenpeace vessel Arctic Sunrise and in inflatable boats, the protesters approached and encircled the Marshall Islands-flagged Marvel Swallow and unfurled banners featuring the likenesses of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, and reading "Their gas, your cash" for photo ops, all the while putting themselves and the larger ship at risk due to the close quarters manoeuvring.

The activist group said their blocking of the ship was done "to denounce how Europe’s reliance on gas fuels geopolitical instability, while leaving households burdened with skyrocketing energy costs."

The activists were ultimately unsuccessful, as the LNG carrier was able to dock in Zeebrugge later that same day.
