Danish-Norwegian partnership to develop ammonia-fuelled gas carriers

Published on

Færder Tankers Norway has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Danish investment firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) to develop ammonia-fuelled medium gas carriers (MGCs) with full ammonia-carrying capability for CIP through its Energy Transition Fund (CI ETF I).

The MGC's design will feature a total capacity of 50,000 cubic metres, a dual-fuel ammonia engine, a retractable bow thruster and aft thruster to deliver high manoeuvrability, front accommodation for the crew, and full ammonia bunkering capabilities.

The first vessel is scheduled to be delivered in the second half of 2028, joining CIP’s future fleet of ammonia carriers. This fleet will meet the transportation and bunkering demands of CIP’s inaugural clean ammonia projects, enabling the delivery of end-to-end logistics solutions and ammonia on board (DOB) to shipping off-takers.

The objective is to facilitate the green transportation of clean ammonia by utilising the cargo as fuel. Færder Tankers will also employ a third-party ship management company.
