China's Qidong Jisheng Shipbuilding has begun construction of a new oil and chemical tanker ordered by local company Zhejiang Huayou Shipping.

Design work on the 26,000DWT vessel is being undertaken by China State Shipbuilding Corporation subsidiary Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI).

Upon completion, the tanker will have an LOA of 156.7 metres, a beam of 26.8 metres, a design draught of 9.5 metres, and a service speed of 13.5 knots.

SDARI expects that, through line optimisation and intelligent longitudinal control system design, the vessel's fuel consumption is three per cent lower than that of similar ships under the same loading and speed conditions.

The designer expects that the main engine will be able to save up to 0.5 tonnes of fuel per day, thus exceeding EEDI Phase III standards, and that the annual average NOx emissions will meet IMO Tier III emissions standards.

The tanker will also be equipped with an intelligent energy efficiency monitoring terminal, which can optimise navigation speed, cargo load and energy consumption in real time to enable the traceability of emissions throughout the vessel's operational life.
