The world's first polar-class dual-fuel oil and chemical tanker Mia Desgagnés has been christened and launched at Besiktas shipyard in Turkey.

Built for Canadian shipping company Desgagnés, the 135-metre Mia Desgagnés is the second in a series of four new product carriers.

The CAD$50 million (US$40 million) vessel with its double hull and Polar 7 certification includes a CAD$9 million investment for the addition of dual-fuel/LNG motorisation.

The Quebec government contributed CAD$700,000 to improve transportation efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Featuring the Cleanshipsuper and Green Passport sustainable development certifications, Mia Desgagnés can run on three different types of fuel, including liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The 15,000DWT vessel has tanks with a capacity exceeding 17,000 cubic metres to transport refined petroleum products or chemicals.

The vessel, which can reach a cruising speed of up to seven knots without using the main engine, can navigate in ice-laden waters.
