Shipping magnate Sammy Ofer remembered

Published on

Hundreds of people turned out to the funeral of Israeli shipping magnate Sammy Ofer Sunday, reported The Jerusalem Post. Ofer died Friday from an undisclosed illness. He was 89.

Ranked the wealthiest man in Israel in the 2011 edition of Forbes Magazine's The World's Billionaires, Ofer headed one of the world's largest private shipping groups with his brother Yuli, consisting of Zim, Royal Caribbean International and Zodiac Maritime Agency. He and his family were also heavily involved in banking and real estate.

Sammy and Yuli's company Ofer Brothers was recently accused by the US State Department of selling a tanker to Iran despite international sanctions, and was facing sanctions itself as a result of it.

While the family denied the accusations, the matter is still being investigated in Israel and the United States
