Following the passing of an amendment through Western Australia's State Parliament, the state's eight statutory port authorities have been amalgamated into five new regional bodies.
The sweeping amendment, known as the Ports Legislation Amendment Bill 2013, sees the creation of the regional entities now known as the Kimberley, Mid West, Pilbara and Southern port authorities.
In a letter to stakeholders, the Port Hedland Port Authority announced it was becoming a part of the Pilbara Ports Authority, along with a neighbouring port authority in Dampier.
Under the legislative changes, all assets, rights and liabilities of the original authority will be transferred to the newly created entity, with all transfers occurring automatically following the merger.
The consolidation does not affect the Fremantle Port Authority, which remains its own separate entity.
