Traffic up at Algeciras Bay

The Port of Algeciras Bay, on the Strait of Gibralta in southern Spain, closed the first half of 2011 with a total traffic of 37 million tonnes, a nine percent increase compared with the same period in 2010.

Following a recovery in activity in the second quarter, especially in the APMT Algeciras and TTI Algeciras terminals, container traffic registered 1,543,181TEUs for the half-year, 3.85 percent more than the first six months of last year. The number of ships entering port rosed by 3.5 percent to 13,504 vessels in the first six months of the year, of which 1.418 were container-carriers, an increase of 34 percent.

The month of June contributed significantly to the port's overall performance. In June container traffic shot to 332,484 units, an all-time record and 46.6 percent higher than in June 2010, when containers were limited to 226,744 units.
