Tianjin has been billed as the first port in north China to serve international cruise lines, the People's Daily has reported.

The Port of Tianjin is to open up to international cruise vessels, handling the world's leading cruise lines, and will act as a homeport for cruises into Asian waters in 2010.

The homeport will have two berths to handle Costa's 'Costa Romantica' and Royal Caribbean's 'Legend of the Seas' in June.

Industry sources said that the port was capable of docking the world's largest cruise liners and had a designed passenger handling capacity of 500,000 persons annually.
