The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has received a permit from the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for the planned Savannah Container Terminal on Hutchinson Island at the Port of Savannah. The permit concludes a three-year review.

The $2.3 billion terminal will cover 350 acres (141.6 hectares) directly across the Savannah River from Ocean Terminal. Its three berths will be able to accommodate the largest containerships, and it will have annual capacity of 3.5 million TEU.

Work is due to start in January 2028, and completion is anticipated in the mid-2030s.

Savannah currently has annual container capacity of 7.75 million TEU.

The new terminal will complement GPA's $1.6 billion redevelopment of Ocean Terminal. That project was more than 60 per cent complete at the end of September and will raise the facility's annual capacity from 200,000 TEU to 1.75 million TEU. Its entire container yard is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.

GPA first outlined the island terminal in February 2020, when it was planned with capacity of 2.5 million TEU.
