Russia's Murmansk Port to have expanded repair facilities for fishing vessels

Published on:

Russian news outlet Interfax reports that design studies and survey works have begun as part of a project to establish a new repair facility for fishing vessels at the Port of Murmansk in Russia's Far North.

The facility will be owned and operated by State Transport Leasing Company (STLC). Following the completion of the design studies, the project team will draft the implementation period as well as the preliminary costs.

The establishment of the STLC fishing vessel repair complex has been proposed following the imposition of sanctions by the West, which has prevented Russian vessels from accessing repair facilities in a number of European countries.

Local officials expect that the new repair facility at Murmansk and other similar facilities throughout Russia will ensure greater autonomy for the country's fishing fleet, allowing it to sustain its operations even without foreign support.

The project has an estimated total cost of approximately RUB20 billion (US$250 million).
