Quay expansion works set for Poland's Gdansk Port
The Port of Gdańsk Authority of Poland has entered into an agreement with local engineering company Budimex for reconstruction of one of the quays at the Port of Gdańsk.
Węglowe Quay, located in the Górniczy Basin, has been used for bulk cargo handling for decades. The Górniczy Basin was established in the first half of the 20th century as a strategic element of the port's cargo handling infrastructure for the export of coal and metal ores.
Currently, due to its poor condition, part of the Węglowe Quay is not used for ship service and cargo handling. Under the recently signed agreement, a new 540-metre quay with a slab structure is to be built.
The work will be carried out in two stages. The first part will cover 252 metres of the quay, while the next one will cover 294 metres. A reinforced concrete pavement, a rail track, and crane rails are to be constructed on the quay.
The quay will be fitted with 1,000kN bollards and spot fender equipment.
The project also includes the construction of new water supply networks, a rainwater drainage system with a purification system, and an electricity grid. Dredging work at the quay will be carried out to a depth of 11.2 metres from its current depth of approximately eight metres.
The works have a total cost of PLN127 million (US$33 million). Completion is scheduled for the end of 2027.
