Cargo turnover at the Ukraine's Sea Commercial Port of Illichivsk reached 1.2 million tonnes in July this year, 307,000 tonnes above the previous year.

The Port handled 491,000 tonnes of general cargo, 85,000 tonnes of liquid bulk and 658 tonnes of dry bulk cargo.

"We see that systematic work on the returning of freight traffic to the Port is bringing a slight, but noticeable result. Today we observe positive dynamics in the growth of most types of cargo. In comparison with the results of seven months in 2011, the cargo turnover had been improved by 5.9 per cent. Certainly, this result is not sufficient for us, so we are actively working with cargo owners to conclude new contracts. In June, we renewed raw sugar handling in the port, and at present we are engaged in attracting new cargoes. If we are able to implement all our plans, we can reach the planned target by the end of the year," said Alexander Grygorashenko, general director of the Port of Illichivsk.

In comparison with the same period last year, the Port increased grain handling by 201%, coal by 133%, motor vehicles and vegetable oil by 34% and cast iron by 24%.

So far in 2012, the port has handled 1,174 vessels and 87,537 wagons.
