Norwegian coastal agency grants funding for 11 fishing port projects
The Norwegian Coastal Administration is committing NOK85.2 million ($8.1 million) in subsidies to 11 projects aimed at improving municipal fishing port infrastructure.
The agency had received 20 applications from municipalities requesting a total of approximately NOK230 million ($21.9 million) by the May 1 deadline.
After an assessment, 11 projects were selected for the available funding. The identified beneficiaries are the fishing ports of Austertana, Honningsvag, Rypefjord, Storekorsnes, Andenes, Ballstad, Bodo, Reipa, Rorvik, Bekkholmen, and Larsnes.
The subsidy scheme is designed to help local governments expand or improve fishing ports with measures such as building new quays, improving wave attenuation, and dredging. “Good fishing ports are absolutely crucial for both safety and value creation,” said department head Ruben Alseth.
He added that the state support allows for projects that are often too expensive for municipalities to undertake on their own.
Officials stated that a "robust" fishing port structure is important for Norway’s emergency preparedness and food supply.
Sven Martin Tønnessen, the agency's Director of Transport, Ports and Fairways, said the projects, "also help to secure the coast as a place to live and a source of livelihood" from a national preparedness perspective.
